2009 ONTARIO PRE-BUDGET CONSULTATIONS COME TO WINDSOR

Next Monday, November 10, 2008, the Honourable Dwight Duncan, Ontario Minister of Finance will be hosting pre-budget consultations in Windsor. The consultation is part of a wider consultation with individuals, organizations, associations and other stakeholders across the province as part of the government’s ongoing dialogue with the citizens of Ontario.

In particular, the Minister is interested in hearing Ontarians’ views on what more the government can do during uncertain economic times to prudently manage Ontario’s finances and protect important public services.

The Chamber will participate in Monday's pre-budget consultations. The Chamber's presentation will be developed by the Chamber's Finance and Taxation Committee and will be available to our members shortly after Monday's event.

Information on the Ministers pre-budget tour is posted at www.fin.gov.on.ca in late October 2008. Individuals who wish to attend one of these consultations can call toll-free 1-800-337-7222 or 1-800-263-7776 TTY.

Advocacy News and Updates

NEW MUNICIPAL AGREEMENT TO REDUCE PRESSURE ON PROPERTY TAXES

On October 31, 2008 the McGuinty government made an announcement it is moving to upload all social assistance benefits and court security costs from municipalities, as stated in an agreement announced by the Province of Ontario, the Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO) and the City of Toronto.

A consensus report released on the same day will help reduce cost pressures for municipalities and property taxpayers. The Report completes the work of the Provincial-Municipal Fiscal and Service Delivery Review, which has created new and better ways to fund and deliver services to the people of Ontario.

The Ontario Chamber of Commerce issued a Media Release saying the announcement is a "significant step in the right direction, and particularly noteworthy considering the current pressures on provincial revenues."

The Windsor-Essex Regional Chamber of Commerce has lobbied continuously Windsor Essex Municipalities for reduction in corporate property taxes. Costs associated with delivery of social services and court security born by municipal governments have become a significant pressure on municipal budgets, leading to higher business property taxes.

CANADIAN CHAMBER TO TACKLE SKILLS NEEDED FOR CANADA'S FUTURE ECONOMIC GROWTH

On November 7, 2008 the Canadian Chamber of Commerce will release a report titled "Building a Twenty-First Century Workforce: A Business Strategy to Overcome Canada's Skills Crisis" addressing the issue of skills necessary for the Canadian Economy. The report, which will be released at the Durham Economic Prosperity Conference in Ajax, ON, is based on consultations with 170,000 chamber members and their workers.

In it, the chamber  will identify actions in four key areas that, if acted upon now, "will do much to build and maintain a competitive workforce for Canada's businesses and economy."
