NEW INTERNATIONAL PROGRAM FOR WINDSOR & DISTRICT AND DETROIT REGIONAL CHAMBER MEMBERS

Dennis W. Archer, Chair of the Detroit Regional Chamber speaks at the unveiling of the International Business Builder Program

Detroit and Windsor – Today, the Detroit Regional Chamber and the Windsor & District Chamber of Commerce announced a joint venture to provide each chamber’s members with increased access to the international marketplace.

Small businesses with 100 or fewer employees will be able to purchase an International Business Builder component, which will be added to their existing chamber memberships.

The International Business Builder can be added onto either a Detroit or Windsor membership for $150, and provides a considerable savings given a new membership for either chamber runs into the hundreds of dollars. The international program will allow members to receive networking and advertising benefits in the other chamber’s market at a reduced cost and starts July 1, 2007. CONVENTION & VISITORS BUREAU LAUNCHES "CROSSINGMADEEASY.COM"

In an effort to counteract the negative perceptions of passport issues, the Convention and Visitors Bureau has developed a new border information website. Meant as a communication tool for everyone in the industry, the website will help dispel many misconceptions about the new passport regulations.

The recent changes to passport regulations, which took effect in January 2007, have caused a great deal of confusion with regard to land border crossings. The U.S. Passport Office has extensively publicized the new regulations, but has made no effort to differentiate between flying into Canada, which does require a passport, and driving across the border, which does not.

At this point you can still come to Windsor with your usual I.D. – a birth certificate and government-issued photo I.D. The new CVB website: www.crossingmadeeasy.com.

WORKING TOGETHER TO SUCCEED

The 2007 Detroit Regional Chamber Mackinac Policy Conference

Mackinac Conference was hosted by the Detroit Regional Chamber of Commerce

There was no denying a sense of urgency in the call for collaborative efforts at the Detroit Regional Chamber’s 2007 Mackinac Policy Conference.  From leaders of “One D” promoting regionalism as the way for the Detroit area to achieve economic prosperity and quality of life, to U.A.W. President Ron Gettelfinger asserting business and labour have more in common than realized, cooperative efforts are being seen as key.

Gettelfinger says business and labour must “take the high road” to meet the challenges demanded by the global marketplace. He also stressed the need for fairer trade agreements to level the playing field for automakers.  In what was likely a first, Gettelfinger received a standing ovation from the primarily business crowd.

In his presentation Canadian Ambassador to the U.S. Michael Wilson talked about the importance of our two countries working together to keep the border efficient and safe.  Wilson talked about the shared concerns of trade and security, and the need to find balance so the border is more “a gateway than a checkpoint.”

In the “The Big Five” session with Detroit area municipal officials, Windsor Mayor Eddie Francis applauded the efforts of “One D”.  Francis described how Windsor and Detroit can be used to promote and sell one another as a region. He says Windsor ’s proximity to Detroit helped in its ranking by the Financial Times of London as the “ Best Overall Top Small City in North America to Invest In”.
