_____________

Leading the business community for creating regional economic prosperity.

 Mandate for Success

The mandate of the Windsor & District Chamber of Commerce is: "to foster an environment which allows Windsor business to compete and prosper, recognizing that a thriving business sector contributes to the quality of life.  This is accomplished by influencing government policy, providing networking opportunities and encouraging private sector leadership."

The Chamber of Commerce Idea

The Chamber of Commerce idea is a concept found only where private initiative and free enterprise exist.

The Chamber of Commerce, as a wholly voluntary institution in Canada, dates back to 1750 in Halifax.

Over the centuries the Chamber has grown from a single-purpose Federation of Traders who organized to promote trade and cut costs by cooperating in certain operations, to a broad community development association. Its belief is that when men and women of high purpose work unselfishly on common problems, progress will result.

The Charter for the original Windsor Board of Trade was approved by the Secretary of State of Canada, March 27 1876. The organization has been in continuous operation since that date, however, its name has changed over the decades. Its original name was WINDSOR BOARD OF TRADE. In 1917 the name was changed to BORDER CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.  Following adoption of provincial legislation for amalgamation (July 1, 1935) of Sandwich, Windsor, Walkerville, and East Windsor, the name was changed to WINDSOR CHAMBER OF COMMERCE in 1934 and to WINDSOR & DISTRICT CHAMBER OF COMMERCE on April 27, 1987.

Today, the Windsor Chamber enjoys a fine reputation for its many effective programs. Most importantly, however, is the realization that a coordinated, cooperative effort integrated with various other community organizations, is necessary for two reasons: to attempt to solve the many complex problems existing, and to take advantage of opportunities which are presented to an area as unique as Windsor.
